Varanasi  

Varanasi

Situated in the centre of India, Varanasi is believed by many Indians to be the heart of the country. Also believed to be the oldest city in the World, this ancient city plays host to many thousands of pilgrims who come here to bathe in the holy waters of the River Ganges. To travellers and tourists alike, perhaps the most incredible experience here is watching the dead being brought to the river, where they are bathed in the river one last time, before being cremated on the Ghats.

SInce the 1960s, when the Beatles stayed there in an ashram, Rishikesh has grown in popularity as a place for holisitic therapies, medicines, and practices, and is often referred to as the yoga capital of the world. Rafting is also popular on the River Ganges, and there are more than enough shops selling goods and services to meet the needs of the most discerning spiritual traveller.
