  • water castle of Tamansari, Mount Merapi & Kaliurang,  Kotagede silver industry (tip: Awang)
  • there are a lot of tour operator to visit Borobudur and Prambanan temple, you can find it at Malioboro street (tip: Eko)
  • I recommend finding a hotel/hostel on Jl Sosrowijayan. Most are on 'Gang 1'. This is the backpacker area.  (tip: James)
  • For Yogjakarta u should go to Malioboro area and find Sastrowijaya street, lots of backpacker hostels there (by Dodik)
  • Borobudur is magnificent and is overlooked by Mt Merapi. Be prepared to have lots of Indonesian schoolkids want to have their photo taken with you! It's about an hours drive from Yogyakarta. You can arrange a trip to see it in the same day as Prambanan temple which resembles Angkor Wat. I would also recommend a walk down Marlioboro Street, past all of the interesting market stalls to the kraton - the sultans palace - to watch a traditional Javanese dance. (tip: James)
  • Halfway down Sosrowijayan is a great bar called Bintang Bar which has live music and is busy at night. It's a good place to meet fellow backpackers. Next door to it is a really good tour shop. The owner, a big Beatles fan, will tell all of the great things you can do in Yogyakarta or the surrounding areas (for example, Dieng Plateua which I never had time to do). You can also book train/plane/bus tickets to surrounding areas. I highly recommend a trip to Bromo. (tip: James)
  • Yogyakarta has many famous beautiful beaches. You can go to "Parangtritis" beach at Bantul or "Sundak" , "Krakal" , "Baron" at GunungKidul, etc. If you go to Yogyakarta, don't forget to visit "Malioboro" (tip: Sisilia)
