Lijiang City is located in the northwestern portion of Yunnan and borders Sichuan. It is in a region where the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (青藏高原) and Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau (云贵高原/雲貴高原) converge. Owing to its low latitude and high elevation, the city centre of Lijiang enjoys a subtropical highland climate.
The world famous Old Town of Lijiang is located in Lijiang City. It is a UNESCO Heritage Site.
The town has a history going back more than 800 years and was once a confluence for trade along the old tea horse road. The Lijiang old town is famous for its orderly system of waterways and bridges. The old town of Lijiang differs from other ancient Chinese cities in architecture, history and the culture of its traditional residents the Nakhi people, therefore people there are called 胖金哥 and 胖金妹 (pàng jīn gē, pàng jīn mèi, male and female respectively). ... read more

The city has an 800 year history from as early as the late Song Dynasty. It is built where the Jade River divides into three and its streams form the canals and waterways which flow along the old town streets. Lijiang was first known by westerns through a book written by an American commissioner who traveled in and out of Yunnan province in late 19th century. Shangrila was also mentioned in that book and became famous. After China's reform in early 80's of the last century, many foreigners were allowed to penetrate deeper in China. Some followed the path of the commissioner and eventually found this quiete then and pretty place. Many of them stayed and relaxed. To fulfill their needs, some started restaurants and bars. At this time, Lijiang was still unknown to most of Chinese people. It was the earth quake in 90's that brought Lijing to the world.
