Laos Visa Regulations

Tourists can stay in Laos for 30 days and Visa on Arrival are available at the main ports of entry.

How long can I stay in Laos?
The length of stay permitted is 30 days with a tourist visa in Lao PDR. You can stay up to 90 days with a pre-arranged Visa on Arrival.

How much does a visa for Laos cost?
The cost for a visa varies by nationalities and where it is being issued. A Visa on Arrival varies from US$20 – US$42 while a visa obtained from the embassy or through travel agent can cost from US$20 to US$60.

Do I need to take care of my visa before I travel to Laos?
Most likely not. Visas on Arrival are available at the airports and the main border crossings (see list below). You will need one passport size photo and the fee in US Dollar. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months upon entering Laos.

Is there a departure tax when leaving Laos?
No. Departure tax is included in the price of the airline ticket.

Vientiane (Wattay), Luang Prabang, Pakse

Laos – China border:
Boten (Laos) – Mengla (Yunnan)
Laos – Cambodia border:
Voen Kham (nearest Cambodian town: Stung Treng)

Laos – Thailand border:
Huay Xai - Chiang Khong (route Chiang Rai - Luang Prabang)
Vientiane - Nong Khai (Friendship Bridge, most popular border crossing)
Tha Khaek - Nakhon Phanom
Savannakhet – Mukdahan (Friendship Bridge II)
Vang Tao - Chong Mek (route Ubon Ratachathani – Pakse)

Laos – Vietnam border:
Sop Hun - Tay Trang (route Muang Khua – Dien Bein Phu)
Banteui - Na Meo (route to/from Sam Neua)
NamCan - Nam Khan (route Phonsavan – Vinh)
Nam Phao – Cau Tre (route Lak Xao – Vinh)
Dansavanh - Lao Bao (route Savannakhet – Hue)
Bo Y (border crossing off the main tourist trail, nearest towns Attapeu, Laos and Ngoc Hoi, Vietnam -  route to southeastern province of Laos)

Extensions and Overstays

Visa extensions are handled by the Vientiane Immigration Office. The charge is US$2 per extra day. Some travel agents can also help to get an extension for around US$3 per extra day.

The penalty for late departure is up to US$10 per day. Long overstays may cause imprisonment.
