Mount Popa is a volcano located about 50km southeast of Bagan. It is best known for the spectacular Popa Taungkalat monastery on top of a solitary peak at the foot of Mount Popa. It can be seen from the River Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) as far away as 60 km (40 miles) in clear weather. To reach the top, you need to remove shoes and socks and climb the 777 steps to the summit.
